The Sustainable Markets Group works for a vision of markets that promote sustainable development at local and global levels, rather than undermining it. The Group has integrated 2 longstanding programmes of work on Business and Sustainable Development, and Environmental Economics, with a common focus on equity. The position has been created by the changes in the Group, with the position of Group Head becoming vacant in late 2009 as a result of the incumbent returning to the role of Principal Researcher.

The role is a permanent senior research, advocacy and management position. Group leadership is a 3 year rotating responsibility including membership of IIED’s Strategy Team. During this time the postholder’s time is likely to be divided 75/25 between research activities and management responsibilities. After 3 years as Group Head the postholder will stand down and take up the Principal Researcher position.
• Research activities include leading research and policy outreach in an area central to the Sustainable Markets Group agenda, especially investment, consumption, or the sustainable economy.
• The Group Head responsibilities include leading the implementation of the Group Strategy, promoting interdisciplinary work within the Group and across Groups, and assisting in international advocacy in line with IIED’s Strategic Plan.
Applicants will have extensive experience of working on sustainable markets issues in Africa, Asia and or Latin America and outstanding experience, achievement and reputation in policy research. Educated to degree level with a post graduate degree in a relevant discipline you will have proven leadership, staff management and fundraising skills together with the ability to build teams, manage budgets, and demonstrate experience in advocacy and external relations. You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
