VAT Adviser - EMEA NL - The Haag  [10/03/2010]

Responsibilities:
As the Dutch VAT adviser you will manage indirect tax liabilities for the Dutch Shell entities. You’ll identify required advisory work for a variety of Shell businesses and functions, execute the work and understand and constructively challenge business requests. The provision of high quality, comprehensive and timely VAT and transfer tax advice is key. (Transfer Tax is a small element of the work and requisite training will be provided.)
You’ll review and understand changes in statute and case law and translate these into the impact on Shell’s business in the Netherlands. Raising VAT awareness in the businesses/functions, reviewing and assessing VAT controls, making recommendations for change and ensuring appropriate follow-up actions are implemented are important parts of this role. You’ll also comply with the Tax Management Framework and Controls and report breaches.

Dealing with a wide range of stakeholders, you’ll establish and maintain good relations with both internal and external parties, including Shell businesses and functions and fiscal authorities to ensure Shell is compliant, and you’ll also network with customers/VAT advisers to establish and share best practice.

Requirements:

This is a great opportunity for an imaginative and creative individual skilled in evaluating issues and developing solutions.
We’re searching for an individual who has extensive knowledge and experience in Dutch VAT law and practice with a recognised professional qualification in VAT/indirect tax (or equivalent) and membership of an accounting or legal professional body. You’ll be able to evaluate VAT tax risks, balance risk with business objectives, and make recommendations that are objective, practical, technically appropriate and supportive of the business. Basic knowledge of ERP systems would be an advantage.

As an effective team player that is confident performing with limited supervision, you’ll be effective at prioritising, adapting to change and working under pressure. Your strong interpersonal, presentation and communication skills will enable you to build and maintain effective relationships with the fiscal authority for the benefit of Shell and be an effective communicator of complex VAT issues both verbally and in writing. Strong negotiating and influencing skills are key and experience in client/project management is required.

A high level of fluency in written and spoken Dutch and English is essential for this position.
