| JOB PURPOSE | | To develop an internationally competitive teaching profile in Respiratory Medicine / General Medicine at Queen's University Belfast, to support a world-class undergraduate teaching programme in patient-centred health care systems, to promote curriculum development in accordance with General Medical Council (GMC) guidelines, to contribute to post graduate education and to carry out clinical duties appropriate for the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. | | Education & Teaching | | To provide academic leadership in Undergraduate Education in Respiratory Medicine / General Medicine and to participate actively in postgraduate training. The new appointee will be a member of the Centre for Medical Education and will be expected to provide teaching in Respiratory Medicine / General Medicine in the undergraduate medical and dental courses, as appropriate in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences. The new appointee will have roles in curriculum development, preparation or revision of study guides, logbooks, portfolios, shadowing logbooks, supervision of student selected components, supervision and development of simulated teaching, careers guidance and contribute to developing online methods of teaching Respiratory Medicine / General Medicine using the e-learning tools at Queen's University. Development of novel teaching methods is encouraged. The new appointee will help coordinate teaching at all hospital sites affiliated to Queen's University, contribute to written and clinical/OSCE examinations and undertake teaching administrative tasks, as specified by the Director of the Centre for Medical Education. It is also anticipated that the new appointee will undertake a key generic role for example; Deputy Medical Admission Office assisting with the overseeing of admissions/offers made to applicants Deputy Disability Officer assisting with the provision of support for students with disabilities particularly during their clinical and academic attachments. | | Research | | The new appointee will be encouraged to develop an internationally competitive research programme relating to teaching, make applications for research grants from appropriate bodies, supervise research students in his/her area of research, publish his/her research findings in high impact journals and present work at appropriate teaching excellence meetings. The main research duties of the post will be linked to teaching within the Centre for Medical Education at Queen's University. However, the new appointee will also be encouraged to collaborate with other academic staff based in the appropriate research centres (for example, Centre for Public Health / Centre for Infection and Immunity). | | Clinical | | To work within a clinical team to deliver the Respiratory Medicine / General Medicine Service. To undertake inpatient care, general clinics and provide subspecialty care for patients with respiratory / general medical conditions. To partake in on-call commitments, audit and other duties as defined by the Belfast Trust, including postgraduate education and supervision. To undertake administrative duties associated with ongoing research, teaching and related patient care. Services relating to the post will be provided within the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. The appointee will have a clinical appointment as a Consultant Respiratory / General Physician in the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. This part of the post will carry a total of 5 PAs (sessions) including out of hours "on-call" duties. | | Belfast Health and Social Care Trust | | The Belfast Trust is managed through a system of clinical and non-clinical Service Groups of which Older People, Medicine, Surgery, Trauma and Orthopaedics is one. The Service Group Director, with the Co-Directors, is responsible for the management arrangements within the Service Group. There is an Associate Medical Director. | | Many of the medical specialties listed below are provided on the 3 acute sites, the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast City Hospital and Mater Hospital and at the Musgrave Park Hospital. The Older People, Medicine, Surgery, Trauma and Orthopaedics Service Group contains a wide range of medical specialties including, Hepatology, Medical Gastroenterology, Endocrinology and Diabetes, Care of Older People — Acute, Rehabilitation and Intermediate Care, Genitourinary Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Infectious Diseases; other specialist interests include Clinical Immunology, Lipid Metabolism and Clinical Pharmacology. The Service Group also contains a wide range of surgical specialties including General Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Upper GI Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery [in conjunction with Mater Infirmorium Hospital], Endocrine Surgery, Orthopaedics Surgery, Fracture Surgery. The Service Group includes a range of community services to older people including mental health services and General Practitioner, out-of-hours services. | | The senior house officer/F2 posts are recognised by the Royal College of Physicians of London for general professional training; the specialist registrar/ST3 posts have all been recognised as specialist registrar posts. | | All members of junior medical and consultant staff are expected to attend and participate in service group and specialty audit activities. | | The post holder will be expected to curtail clinical sessions such as clinics or endoscopy to enable them to undertake a post-take ward round. If the post-holder must attend the hospital as a consequence of on-call commitments, clinical sessions may be cancelled in lieu. It would be expected that the post holder manages these duties to minimise the impact on service. | | The Trust is committed to continuing professional development (CPD) and provides adequate study leave and financial support. | | CLINICAL (JOB PLAN) | | The appointee will have a clinical appointment as a Consultant Physician with a special interest in Respiratory Medicine in the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. This part of the post will carry a total of 5 PAs sessions including out of hours "on-call" duties for acute general medicine. | | Review of Job Plan | | This job plan is subject to review once a year by the University Job Planning Group and the relevant Clinical Director any changes being by agreement within the departments (QUB and Belfast Trust). For this purpose, the appointee, the University Job Planning Group and the Clinical Director will be provided with a copy of the current job plan that will be agreed by consensus. Local procedures must be followed if it is not possible to agree a job plan, either initially or at an annual review. These procedures may culminate in an appeal to the University Job Planning Group and the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. | | Example of potential weekly schedule (PA split: NHS=5, QUB=5) which should be regarded as flexible and averaged over the year (for example - the post holder could have the ability to clear the schedule of NHS work at times when needing to organise examinations in the annual student assessments). |
